The Blue Car
« on: August 17, 2010, 12:44:48 PM »
Ok so some of you know me, some of you don't.  short story, I started with messing with a 92 ELX, rebuilt that motor 3 times, then I got a wrecked 92 EGT, fixed it up, THEN a buddy blew the motor in a 91 EGT that is the nice blue color, yeah, so he sold it to me for cheap with tons of mods in it, so I bought it, rebuilt the engine from the ground up.  here's some pics and videos of the build.

ok so the start of the build, phase 1, get it to the house so I can rebuild it, it ended up spinning the rod bearing completely and then sounded like this!
Escort - Final Knocking Days Small | Large

so then I started tearing it apart
  before touching it

1 hour into the tearing apart process

did cut intake manifold mod

I left her naked for about 2 weeks

self explanatory pics:

fully rebuilt the head myself.
my engine compartment as of lately, looks the same today.  and yes that black box in the intake makes a difference in torque at high rpm!

ok so the escort madness I have going on

ok so the videos, here's the best and latest one I have so far
Another onramp run and I had to hit 75 to merge. Small | Large
full 2 1/4 mandrel bent exhaust it rocks!

and a little walk around of it I did just so you can see all of it, and the only real change was the wrench shifter got replaced with a mustang inspired shifter the 96ish style it's nice.
Walk around of the blue car Small | Large

anyway, that's a short short summary of my escort madness.  any questions feel free to ask away, it's also got the E cam mod, and B8 crankshaft, it's 9.2 lbs lighter than the stock forged BP crank according to my scale, it spins up so fast, OH and speaking of spinning up fast soon to have a Garrett T25 turbo putting down 6 lbs of boost in!

I'll do how to's on it all if you guys want to know how to do it.

Well the main reason i want it is because it's and EGT and it is blue. The only way it could be better is if it was E4 red.  And i'm glad you enjoy the forum.

So I did another mod, I set my timing at 15* from running 12 for the break in, WOW what a difference, all of you waiting to do it and putting it off, go out there now with your timing light and set it at at least 14*, I am running REGULAR 87 octane too, but I have the PCV oil separator so that really helps keep it 87 octane instead of like 85 with the oil going in the intake, PCV is dirty stuff, put at least one of those air compressor filters inline your PCV hose and keep it empty.  put it down low so the oil doesn't climb back up the hose into the intake, it really makes a huge difference!  watery sludgy oil, I'll take a picture next time I empty my pickle jar!

but yeah timing advance mod, do yourself a big favor and run at least 14*  it won't hurt anything.  you'll have more power all around, low and high rpm!

so I've decided where I wanna go with this build, right now it's an N/A screamer, that's what I'ma keep it as, I'd LOVE to boost but N/A is what I love more, plus once I boost I'll just want MORE BOOST.  so I am holding off till I get a good job and a 2nd car for that.

so next on my list of the build after a job will be :
full stand alone MegaSquirt
MSD Ignition box with the dual spark below 3,500 rpm or whatever it is
11:1 compression pistons
and last but NOT least, ITB's.

it might take me a few years to do all that but it'll be a screamer!  my GOAL is 170 WHP on a perfect tune.  I saw a miata that got to 178 WHP with all mentioned and what all I have.  I hope it's doable someday but right now I'm happy with my current build it's more than fast enough for my daily driving needs!  and fast enough for my current wants ;)

thanks for tuning in everyone!  and keep tuning ;)

If you are willing to do all that consider doing a 2.1L stroker as well. have the crank offset welded and ground to increase the throw. All you would need is longer rods and you are in business.

Oh dude, I'd go crazy with a 2.1 stroker, yeah I'd love to do that mod!  that'd be WICKED COOL!  oh man so much power!!!  N/A is an expensive way to go slow, but when it's done right it can be wicked cool, forced induction is cheaper and "easier" but I just don't want to mess with it, I know how to build N/A stuff so might as well.  I wanna dyno my blue car and see what she's throwing to the ground!  I am guess right now at LEAST 130 WHP with how hard she pulls and scoots.

so everyone, next week my project plan on my good old daily driver is BLUE GAUGES AND NEEDLES!  I'm gonna be studying hardcore to get my computer certs and gonna need something through the week to break up the study time.  oh I'm also installing some custom switches to make the ignition work like I want it, radio and cig lighter on a rocker switch and then rig up some anti theft switches ;)  hidden somewhere.  so that's the deal with blue, oh and please enjoy these pics of the quick rim paintin job I did a while ago, I actually put my 195/60's on the car instead of the 205/50's  now my speedo is right on and the ride is much smoother, I love my little blue car :P  such a good car I won't ever sell it!

ok here's pics enjoy ya'll!
so here's the blue car and my big brothers sweet prius!  after I painted my rims he asked me if I could do something with his so pics of that will come someday :D

a sweet side view

here's the worst rim as far as chips and such, I just roughed it up as it was and sprayed it, it went from this to that just in 5 min :P

yes I know I sprayed the tire with paint, it's black it matches I don't care right now, it'll either A wear off, or B I'll take paint thinner to it when I feel like doing something about it, no one has said a word about it though LOL  perminent tire shine right?

anyway that's my stuff, I advanced my timing out to 17* now and she's running fantastic, I lost some high end power with the timing advance believe it or not, so I just shift at 6k at the latest now which is how I drive I don't rev out anyway, but anyway the low end power from 1k to 6k is all there and no low end loss so I'm not complaining at all!  I'd rather loose some power above 6k rather than not have it at 1-2k rpm, my driving I shift at 2-2,500 rpm so it's perfect for how I drive, if I drag race it I'll fill it with premium and then the 17* will be able to perform to the fullest!

Thanks for reading and looking ladies and gents!  hope you enjoy my daily driven madness, dash pics next week!  oh and I took the buffer to it and shined the hood up some and some minor scratches, looks pretty good :)

gauges......

sanded off the green, more like ground off with my dremel and light touch.  used a blue permanent marker and did 3 passes with it so like 3 coats, and here's them so far, they are a nice mid blue and very transparent still :D

Thanks dude :D  I'll be installing the gauges sometime this week, or whenever I get to it you know.  and yeah I like the way the center caps stand out and it does look like some sort of cop cruiser LOL  I don't care I think it's different and looks fine for now, I just painted the rims black cuz I didn't want caymen green on my blue car ;)  and they were chipped and flakey you know.  I have had people take a second look at the car because of the way the rims/caps are lol, in parking lots leaving or getting in I've gotten compliments before :)  way more to come this is an ongoing daily driver project now!  when I get time I change what I want on it.  making it MINE

just an update, I gassed up in blue driving pretty easy, a little pull here and there nothing big, got 35 mpg, a church buddy is using acetone in his gas and seeing great results in his 2.3 liter ranger so I put 1 oz per 5 gallons in my car and we'll see what the result of that is!  it's pretty easy I usually run it so it needs around 10 gallons so just dump in 2 oz and done, I'll let you guys know the results and or any damage that happens from it, there won't be any damage just pure gas mileage bump!  it does pull a smidgen better, sounds really aggressive, I'm not saying more aggressive under a load cuz it changes every time from hills, gears etc, but it sounds mean!

just a little useless update, bought a class 1 trailer hitch for the blue car, came just as I ordered, gonna install it soon, and got the wiring harness for it with the converter to go from independent turn signals to combined with the brake lights so I can have a standard flat 4 wire plug, so soon I'll have pics and a video of pulling my small utility trailer and I'll let ya'll know how safe it is to pull around 1000 lbs to start with :P  my trailer is rated for 1650 gross weight and half a cubic yard of sand will max the gross weight out and I'll be using my car to pull that after I test with 1000 lbs of scrap steel, we shall see!  should be good hahahaha.  oh and my last fill up's with 1 oz of acetone per 5 gallons have all been around 37 mpg, it was 37.2, 37.5, 34 (long fast freeway trip over a few passes) and 36.5 with a VERY heavy foot, like this....

blue car 30-70 Small | Large

ta ta for now :D

all of that sounds interesting but I dont know what any of it means.
I need to get better at being a mechanic. I loved rebuilding the engine at school last year. I don't have tools to do anything except for an oil change.

ROFL, too late it's on hahahaha, it's not shame, it's actually pretty sweet, plus the black car isn't road worthy right now, and not NEARLY as much power ;)  and black car is not insured :P

I'll get pics up later, it almost moved my boat in the soggy back yard, just didn't have quite enough grip in the wet muddy grass LOL, the van could barely get enough grip to move it so I don't feel bad :P  it'll be nice I have over half a ton of scrap metal to run to the scrap yard, it'll be nice to get rid of all of that junk that's been laying around!  van insurance ran out a month ago and we decided to not renew it, so now my car is the "truck" and I can put my 12 foot aluminum boat on the utility trailer with the sides off (6 bolts and they're off so easy) and get some ratchet straps and just slide the boat on, load it up, ratchet strap it down, and go fishing!  if just 2 people go no use in hauling the big boats out right?!  ok now I'm tiredly rambling, so night!

I could get some!!!!  next week I plan on pulling the boat into the garage and pulling the motor so I'll get some pics up, here's the receiver though if you wanna see a pic of something!  oh and the car is 1 inch lower hahaha

ok so you can't see it all that well, lemme get a utility trailer pic....

so that was a 900 lbs scrap metal run, lets just say the trailer is 350, so I hauled 1250 lbs effortlessly to the scrap yard, even used 5th to go 35 no lugging at all!  touch a hill and had to go 4th but not too bad! I hauled 1500 lbs with trailer+scrap wood in it sunday, no sweat!  even pulled it into the back yard and didn't get stuck in the wet soggy grass!

ok so the 2nd gen ford probe springs.  I do not recommend them at all, the 1 inch drop is hawt and nice, but they are rigid and stiff as all could be!  I got Eibach's and I'm taking them out and returning to stock springs for now and gonna sell the Eibach probe springs for profit hopefully.  I'ma ask 100 they are nice springs for probes.  anyway yeah don't even think about it, the escorts are too light, now when you put some weight on the springs they perform NICE, like hauling trailers, but unless you add 300 lbs or so up front and tow a trailer all the time, impractical and annoying cuz you bounce a bit.

blue got the chance to shed the stupid ford probe springs today, I opted to just cut my stock springs to get the stance I was after, I knew what I wanted so I took 1 coil out of the rear springs on the bottom, the skinny little coil, dropped the rear around 1/4 of an inch if even that, no bounce still nice and soft travel, struts have 220k on them so they are worn out not blown though!  so the front springs I cut almost 3/4 of a coil out, ricey yeah yeah I know, it lowered the front about 3/4 of an inch or so and is WAY LESS bouncy than the probe springs, I could live the probe springs but didn't like it it was a very rigid rough ride, well now it's good I don't mind a tiny bit of rigidness in the front it gives it a nice feel and there's hardly any bounce cuz the rear doesn't participate in any bouncing, so with the rear end higher now I can load the trailer up and it'll equal out with the front end and I won't have going and stopping issues, this is just a TEMPORARY setup till I get working and get S/R struts and sprint 1.8 inch drop springs!  that's where it's at!  this is just cuz I didn't wanna put STOCK CRAP springs back in as is, I wanted to mess with it just cuz I can and it's not gonna be for too long.  maybe 6 months tops is all.

I'll get pics of the stance up when I fix my dang tire that has a leaky tire plug in it!  gonna go to the old high school auto shop and take the tire off the rim and patch it from the inside this time do it right you know.... it's on the shoulder of the tire so no shop will patch it and plus I'm not gonna pay for what I can do if I have the right equipment so yeah...  gonna patch it and put it on the back incase it does blow, got my crappy burn out tires on so it looks lame, 7 spoke EGT rims front and black fanblades in the back... yeah...

thanks for reading and if you think cutting the springs even in moderation is ricerish, tell me! :P

Just buff the inside of the tire and put a U.P 6 patch on it with lots of cement. I would take it appart, plug it with a good plug then, buff and  U.P 6 it and you got double chance at sealing.

Oh on a side not this isnt near as bad as i ran a stick though a brand new 850.00 BFGoodrich 15.5 x 38 rear tractor tire. About made me sick. Not to mention the tire was filled with calcium for weight. So the cost of repair was 48.00 for a tube, 35.00 labor to break it down, remove the stick that was the size of an ink pin, and you don't even want to know what i had to pay them to take the calcium out lol. The tire weighed around 650 lbs.
